Sledge hockey
In sledge hockey, Paralympic rookie Adam
Dixon, Ray Grassi, and three-time Paralympic
veteran and team captain Jean Labonte´ lead
the defence, alongside forward Brad Bowden. Canada
is the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games gold medalist and 2008
World Champion.
Wheelchair Curling
Jim Armstrong skipped Canada to a 9-2 victory against Sweden to take their first Wheelchair Curling World Championship title in February 2009.
Para-alpine Skiing
Lauren Woolstencroft from North Vancouver, B.C., won the gold medal in the Giant Slalom and silver in the Super G at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino. At the Salt Lake City 2002 Games she won gold medals in the Slalom and Super G, as well as bronze in the Giant Slalom. She is the most decorated athlete of the 2008/2009 season from any nation, with 11 wins on the World cup circuit and 15 overall, her best-ever season performance.
Other para-alpine athletes to watch are Kimberly Joines, Viviane Forrest and Chris Williamson, all members of Canada’s Para-Alpine Ski Team who made history by finishing on top of IPC Nations Cup standings for the 2008/2009 season for the first time ever.
Para-nordic skiing (cross-country and biathlon)
Brian McKeever is a World Champion in cross-country skiing and is attempting to become the first Canadian athlete with a disability to qualify to compete at both the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Colette Bourgonje is a veteran of five Paralympic Games. She competed in the historic Summer Games in 1992 in Albertville in wheelchair racing, the first time the Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in the same city. Colette then took up cross-country skiing. She won two silver medals at the 1998 Paralympic Games in Nagano and 2 bronze medals in 2006 in Torino. She also competed in Lillehammer (1994) and Salt Lake City (2002).
Cross-country skier, Jodi Barber won four silver medals at the 2008 Canadian National Championships in her first season of competition. In the 2008/2009 season she won her first international medal with a bronze at the 2009 IPC Cross-Country Skiing World Championships Vuokatti, Finland.
